Context

The Secondary Steel Erection Supervisor is responsible for supervising and coordinating all secondary steel erection activities during night shift operations on major infrastructure and construction projects in the UK.

The role focuses on ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality installation of secondary steel structures while maintaining compliance with project specifications, HSE standards, and construction schedules. The supervisor plays a critical role in supporting uninterrupted construction progress during night operations.

This is a site-based leadership role requiring strong experience in steel erection, construction supervision, and coordination of multidisciplinary teams in demanding project environments.

Key Responsibilities

Night Shift Site Supervision

  • Supervise secondary steel erection activities during night shift operations.
  • Coordinate manpower, subcontractors, materials, tools, and lifting equipment required for execution.
  • Ensure smooth continuity between day and night shift activities through effective communication and reporting.
  • Monitor work progress and ensure compliance with project schedules and priorities.

Secondary Steel Installation Activities

  • Supervise installation of secondary steel structures, supports, access platforms, handrails, ladders, brackets, frames, cable tray supports, miscellaneous steel components.
  • Verify installation works according to fabrication drawings, erection drawings, method statements, technical specifications.
  • Monitor alignment, bolting, fit-up, and structural integrity during erection activities.

Workforce & Subcontractor Management

  • Lead teams of steel erectors, riggers, fitters, and subcontractors during night operations.
  • Allocate work fronts and monitor workforce productivity.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings before shift activities.
  • Resolve technical and operational issues encountered during execution.

HSE & Compliance

  • Enforce project HSE procedures and UK construction safety standards.
  • Ensure compliance with lifting and rigging procedures, work at height requirements, permit-to-work systems, night shift safety protocols. Participate in safety inspections, audits, and incident investigations. Promote a strong safety culture across all steel erection activities.

Coordination & Reporting

  • Coordinate closely with construction managers, structural teams, QA/QC inspectors, HSE departments, logistics/material handling teams, planning engineers.
  • Prepare: daily/night shift progress reports, manpower reports, issue logs, corrective action follow-ups.
  • Support construction milestones and schedule recovery plans where required.

Candidate Profile

Education

Diploma or Degree in: Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Engineering, or related technical discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum 7–12 years of experience in: steel erection supervision, structural steel installation, infrastructure projects, industrial construction, heavy construction environments. Proven experience supervising night shift construction activities.
  • Experience on large EPC or infrastructure projects preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Secondary steel erection supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel installation, bolted connections, erection sequencing, rigging and lifting operations, and work at height activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, fabrication drawings, erection plans, construction layouts.
  • Familiarity with QA/QC inspection requirements and construction standards.
  • Good reporting and construction coordination skills.

Language Requirements

Professional English mandatory.

Ability to communicate effectively with site teams and project management.
