Context
The Mechanical / HVAC Commissioning Lead is responsible for the commissioning and validation of all thermal management systems within a data center. This role ensures that critical cooling infrastructure operates reliably under all conditions, preventing server overheating and guaranteeing continuous IT load availability.
The position plays a key role in verifying that the cooling plant can sustain full heat rejection capacity during peak data center utilization.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead commissioning activities for all mechanical and HVAC systems
- Develop and execute commissioning plans, test procedures, and validation scripts
- Verify performance of cooling systems under full and partial IT load conditions
- Ensure proper integration between BMS and HVAC control systems
- Validate redundancy and resilience strategies (N+1, 2N cooling architectures)
- Supervise contractor and vendor commissioning activities
Critical Testing Activities
Thermal Load Validation
- Confirm cooling capacity meets design IT heat load requirements
- Test system behavior under peak server utilization scenarios
- Validate temperature and humidity stability in data halls
System Performance Testing
- Chiller efficiency and sequencing tests
- CRAH/CRAC airflow balancing and control verification
- Pump staging and differential pressure control validation
- Cooling tower performance and heat rejection efficiency checks
Failure Scenario Testing
- Simulate equipment failure and redundancy activation
- Validate automatic switchover of cooling loops
- Ensure uninterrupted cooling during component outages
Technical Requirements
- Strong experience in HVAC systems for critical environments
- Deep knowledge of chilled water systems and thermal dynamics
- Experience with data center cooling architectures
- Understanding of BMS integration and control sequences
- Familiarity with commissioning tools, sensors, and balancing procedures
- Knowledge of ASHRAE data center environmental standards
Candidate Profile
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Engineering, or equivalent
- Proven experience in data center or mission-critical facility commissioning
- Strong background in large-scale cooling plant systems
- Experience with commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting HVAC systems
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary engineering environments
- Strong analytical mindset with attention to operational reliability
