The Rise of Agentic AI in Engineering & Construction
Artificial intelligence is moving beyond isolated productivity tools. In the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector, the emergence of agentic AI is opening the door to a new way of managing projects, connecting workflows and supporting complex decisions across the project lifecycle.
Unlike traditional AI applications designed for specific tasks, AI agents can coordinate activities across design, engineering, procurement, planning, project controls and field execution. The rise of agentic AI does not eliminate the role of engineers, planners, project managers or construction professionals.
Instead, it can shift their focus toward the activities where human judgment is most valuable: evaluating risks, making critical decisions, managing stakeholders and taking accountability for project outcomes.
McKinsey estimates that AI could potentially automate a significant share of nonphysical work in AEC, including up to 50% in architecture and engineering and 39% in construction.
The challenge will therefore be to determine which activities should be human-led, AI-supported or increasingly automated.
Data will become a strategic asset
For agentic AI to deliver lasting value, access to reliable project data will be critical.
AEC companies already possess vast archives of drawings, RFIs, specifications, schedules and project reports. The next step is turning this information into structured, reusable knowledge that AI systems can learn from and support.
This could also transform BIM from a static project deliverable into a continuously updated source of project intelligence, connecting design information with progress, materials, schedules and performance throughout the asset lifecycle.
A new era for AEC
Agentic AI represents a broader shift in how engineering and construction companies can operate. The opportunity is not simply to work faster, but to create more connected, consistent and data-driven project environments.
As AI agents become increasingly integrated into project workflows, companies that combine technology, engineering expertise, quality data and strong governance will be better positioned to improve project delivery while maintaining human accountability.
The future of AEC may not be about replacing professionals with AI. It may be about giving professionals intelligent systems that help them see more, coordinate faster and make better-informed decisions.
